A longtime insurance company is firming up its presence in Tampa Bay. Geico, which bills itself as the third largest insurer in the country, will be opening an office in Tampa.

The 190,000-square-foot space will take up three buildings in Corporate Oaks Business Park in the 5400-5500 block of West Cypress Street. The company aims to add 1,000 new jobs with positions open for application starting in April, according to a statement.

“As Florida’s second-largest auto insurer and the third largest in the United States, we are thrilled to expand our footprint in the Sunshine State,” says GEICO Senior Vice President Angela Rinella in the statement. “Tampa’s robust talent pool and dynamic business environment make it the ideal location for our newest office, allowing us to better serve our growing customer base with various insurance products while creating significant employment opportunities in the region.”

The company says its Florida workforce currently includes nearly 3,800 employees primarily based in Jacksonville and Lakeland, with additional offices for its legal staff located throughout the state.

The new office will be searching for insurance sales, service and claims positions, while offering leadership tracks toward management positions, the company says.

Geico, an acronym for Government Employees Insurance Company, was founded in Maryland in 1936 and has $80 billion in assets serving all 50 states. In addition to auto insurance, the firm also offers homeowners, renters, condo, flood, identity theft and term life policies.
