Medability GmbH, a Munich-based company focused on producing surgical simulation technology, is expanding to the U.S. and has chosen Tampa as its first location.

The firm leased 1,600 square feet of office space in downtown Tampa with plans to add a dozen jobs in technical and software engineering, business development and marketing in its first few years, according to a statement.

“Establishing our U.S. headquarters in Tampa is an exciting milestone for Medability as we expand our global presence,” says Patrick Wucherer, CEO of Medability GmbH in the statement. “The United States represents a critical market for our innovative surgical simulators, not only to support surgeons in advancing their skills but also to collaborate with the U.S. MedTech industry in showcasing and adopting new surgical technologies. Tampa’s vibrant life sciences ecosystem provides the perfect foundation for us to grow, connect with industry leaders, and contribute to medical innovation. We’re excited to support healthcare professionals and industry partners alike in advancing patient care.”

Medability chose Tampa based on the regional focus on life sciences, according to the statement. The Tampa Bay EDC’s website says that more than 20% of those practicing life sciences in Florida reside in the Tampa metropolitan area.

Medability was founded in 2012 by Wucherer. Its products such as DuO and Simbone focus on MISS training, or Moderate-Intensity-Steady-State, where surgeons use real instruments to train on different simulations using the company’s developed technology.
