The city of Tampa recently announced the hiring of a new director of housing and community development. Jeff McKittrick, who previously served as the assistant director of housing and community development in Pasco County, will be joining the administrative fold.

"Jeff McKittrick is a recognized leader who understands our housing and affordability crisis," says Mayor Jane Castor in a statement. "With nearly three decades of experience in local government, I am confident he will deliver on the fundamental vision we have to help our struggling residents secure a safe place to live."

Prior to working in Pasco County, where he assisted in managing the housing department’s $20 million annual budget, McKittrick worked in several different government roles. He served as a corrections officer and a deputy in Manatee and Sarasota counties before relocating to Tennessee, where he was also a deputy before taking a grants and redevelopment manager position, the release states.

McKittrick’s hiring kicks off 2025 after some staggering hosusing statistics were released last year. “Nearly 40% of Tampa residents are housing cost-burdened, meaning more than 30% of their monthly gross income goes toward paying for housing,” according to the city of Tampa website

The city of Tampa’s housing and community development department covers a variety of programs including those that assist low and moderate-income residents with purchasing, renting or rehabilitating existing housing units.
