A ceremonial groundbreaking this week marked a new chapter for the former site of Bath + Racquet Club in Sarasota.
Tucked behind Trader Joe’s and Chili’s on Robinhood Street, the site that used to be a hub for tennis enthusiasts is now a hard-hat zone filled with heavy machinery.
“Bath + Racquet is officially underway, officially under construction,” said Fabio Di Prima, president of Silver Sky Capital, which is developing the property. His company took out a $79 million construction loan for the project in March, the Business Observer previously reported.
When redeveloped, the location will be home to Bath + Racquet Residences & Club, a luxury condominium with 256 units as well as 13 outdoor tennis courts, 12 indoor pickleball courts, four indoor pickleball courts, a full-service restaurant and bar for members and residents, pool, spa and fitness center.
“We really strongly believe this will shape the city,” Di Prima said at the April 9 groundbreaking. The event was attended by future residents as well as those within the business and tennis communities, including professional tennis player Tommy Haas, who is serving as global ambassador and club curator for the project.
“Membership will open very soon” for the Bath + Racquet Club, Di Prima said.
The Bath + Racquet Residences will include one to three-bedroom condos in four buildings that are 45 feet tall.
Condo sales began in January 2023, and “the majority” of those on the market have been pre-sold, including all 33 one-bedroom units, according to a statement. There are more than 20 floor plans, including seven three-story penthouses.
Condos start at $700,000 for a one-bedroom; $756,100 for a two-bedroom; and $1.07 million for a three-bedroom, according to the Bath + Racquet Residences & Club website.
“It’s going to be a legendary project,” said Nicole Gary of Keller Williams New York, part of the team marketing the property.
Others speaking at the groundbreaking echoed the sentiment.
Sarasota City Commissioner Kyle Battie called the ceremonial event a “monumental, historic day” for the city, recalling that he helped knock down the walls when demolition of the former property began. That was in July 2023, according to sister publication YourObserver.com.
The project has been years in the making. Silver Sky and Federal Finance Group bought the 13-acre property in 2022 for $15.35 million from developer Mark Lucas, who operated the club from 2017 to 2020 and tried to redevelop it. The original Bath + Racquet was founded in 1969 and became a popular mecca for tennis enthusiasts in the 1970s.
Plans from the current owners call for a 43,500-square-foot private club “to reinvigorate the heritage and positioning of the original Sarasota Bath & Racquet Club,” the Business Observer previously reported.
“Everything great takes time,” Battie said. “This is going to be a beacon not just for the city but for the region.”
The first residents are expected to move in by December 2026, according to a statement.
