A Massachusetts point of sale software firm that’s been in business for nearly 90 years is expanding in Florida, with an office in Fort Myers.

The firm, Forbes Snyder, serves thousands of restaurants, liquor stores, retail markets and garden centers, according to a statement, with “high-performance systems (that) streamline operations, reduce customer wait times and integrate payroll and scheduling.”

The office, Forbes Snyder South, is now open at 3525 Edison Ave.

The Easthampton-based company’s Florida expansion stems, the release states, from a POS system that crashed last fall at Prime 239 Steakhouse in Cape Coral. Travis Prince, director of operations at the restaurant, brought on Forbes Snyder. Prince was so impressed, the release states, he joined Forbes Snyder as regional sales manager to lead the Florida expansion.

“Our hands-on approach and industry expertise save restaurant owners thousands on credit card fees while we deliver exceptional local support,” says Forbes Snyder owner Paul K. (PK) Backholm in the statement. “We offer restaurants the best of two worlds: the stability and peace of mind with a local store level POS with the added accessibility and increased functionality of a cloud-based system.”

Forbes Snyder was founded in 1936.

Backholm, who joined the company in 2001 and acquired it in 2007, according to its website, has a connection to Southwest Florida. He moved to town after college — he attended Southern New Hampshire University, working as a bouncer, barback and bartender, the release states.

After moving here, he worked his way up as a bartender and manager at several popular restaurants on Fort Myers Beach and eventually became the general manager of Beach Pier Side Grill. In 1996, he transitioned to the beverage industry, joining Southern Wine & Spirits, managing liquor and wine sales to restaurants and liquor stores throughout Lee County. That job, the release states, led him back to Massachusetts and Forbes Snyder.
