The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort and Residences, an ultra-luxury 18-acre beach resort now open to guests, was constructed to the highest standards, featuring a 168-room Marriott Hotel, 68 condominiums, eight restaurants and bars, and 42 water features. This project proved to be both an exciting and challenging endeavor for contractor Moss. Josh Mutchler, Vice President and Project Executive of Moss’ Sarasota Team, shared his experience working on the St. Regis and his career path at Moss.

Q. What is unique about the St. Regis?
A. It’s an incredible project. Everything centers on delivering an exceptional luxury experience, so every aspect of construction had to meet exacting standards—the stunning spa, the saltwater lagoon, and the meticulous finishes in the rooms and condominiums.

Q. What challenges did this pose?
A. Due to the scale and complexity, it was like building two projects side by side. We even hired two sets of subcontractors working simultaneously for many trades. Additionally, we had to transport 700-800 workers to a barrier island daily, which required finding a mainland parking area and busing them in—something the workers really appreciated. There were also unique challenges with building within the Coastal Construction Control Line, which ran through the middle of the site, but being on the beach made it all worthwhile.

Q. Tell us about your career path at Moss.
A. I joined Moss 10 years ago as a senior project manager on a Wyndham project and was promoted to project executive, and now to VP with the St. Regis. Moss offers a clear path for advancement—if you have the capability, you’ll get the opportunities. It’s a very entrepreneurial environment. I doubt another company would have given me the chance to lead a $300-million-plus project with the full confidence of senior management behind me.

Q. Does that set Moss apart?
A. Absolutely. Moss empowers you to create exceptional results and gives you the autonomy to manage your team as you see fit. At the same time, leadership ensures everyone understands the company’s direction, which is a significant draw.

Q. Is that what attracted you and others to Moss?
A. Definitely. We work on fascinating, high-quality projects that appeal to young professionals looking to make a mark. A core value at Moss is honoring relationships—valuing employees by recognizing their hard work and fostering growth, and treating subcontractors as true partners. When you’re part of our team, we invest in your success because we believe that strong relationships are essential for achieving excellence together on every project.
