Akima, a northern Virginia-based contractor focused on IT support of the military, recently opened a base of operations in Tampa.

The organization plans to provide support to MacDill Airforce Base, citing its two four-star Combatant Commands: the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) as "essential" to national security.

"We’re committed to Tampa Bay and its community for the long term," says Bill Monet, president and CEO of Akima in a statement. "Our focus is to deliver outstanding work for our customers, to create a rewarding environment for our team, and to provide meaningful support to our shareholders. We’re excited about putting down roots here and becoming a permanent member of the local business community.”

In addition to IT solutions, Akima’s 10,000 employees around the globe also work in logistics, aerospace technology and mission support, to name a few. Akima is a subsidiary of NANA, an Alaska Native Corporation owned by more than 15,000 Iñupiat shareholders. According to the statement, Akima’s mission is to provide positive customer service in order to create a long-lived asset for NANA consistent with Iñupiat values.
