A pizza franchise headquartered in Maryland known for its square slices is coming soon to Collier County.

Ledo Pizza — which serves up dine-in or carryout pizza, subs, wings, soups, salads and pasta — will open in Ave Maria in late August, according to a statement from the Annapolis-based company.

“We are so excited to be opening soon in Ave Maria,” franchisee Scott Taggart, who is from Maryland, says in a statement. “We are the official pizza of the Ave Maria University Athletics and look forward to supporting the students and faculty this upcoming school year. We have created a fun spot for the community to gather and cheer on their favorite teams while enjoying fresh, delicious pizza and pasta dishes with family and friends.”

Ledo Pizza will occupy a 3,000-square-foot space at 5360 Ave Maria Blvd., Suite 106. In addition to a large dining room, the location will feature a patio, event space, full-service bar and flat-screen TVs.

The East Coast pizza franchise started in 1955 in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., according to a statement from Ledo. It now has more than 120 locally owned restaurants in nine states and the District of Columbia with multiple new eateries in the pipeline, the statement says.

When it was founded in the 1950s, Ledo Pizza reports most baking pans were rectangular, so it fashioned its pizzas into rectangles and sliced them into squares. Later on, pizza shop owners began using round pans to "cut costs by giving the appearance of more, while actually offering less," according to Ledo, which says it "never cuts corners" in staying true to its roots by offering rectangular pies.

When it opens, the Ave Maria restaurant will be the third Ledo Pizza in Florida. The other locations are in Tampa and in Ormond Beach on the East Coast.
