Six senior-focused primary care centers will be opening in the Tampa area in the next year adjacent to Walmart Supercenters.

CenterWell, the health care services business of Humana, will operate the centers under the brand names CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers. The centers will be located in clinical office space formerly occupied by Walmart Health, according to a statement.

Walmart Health announced in April that it was closing all of its locations, including nine in the Tampa Bay area. It cited lack of profitability amid a “challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs” in making the decision to shutter.

CenterWell will open the new primary care centers at 23 Walmart Supercenter retail stores in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas, according to a statement. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, and each location’s design, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, offers patients the access that they have come to expect at our clinics across the nation,” CenterWell President Dr. Sanjay Shetty says in a statement. Humana operates 300 primary care centers for seniors across 15 states, the statement says.

Staff at the centers will include board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners and medical assistants who will coordinate care with social workers, clinical pharmacists, behavioral health specialists and care coaches. In addition to most Medicare Advantage plans, the centers will accept original Medicare as far as insurance.

The primary care centers will be adjacent to Walmart Supercenters in these metropolitan areas: Tampa/St Petersburg, Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.

“We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care," Shetty says. "“CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high quality health care that is accessible, comprehensive, and most of all, personalized."

Here are the locations around Tampa where the clinics will open, according to a Humana spokesperson:

  • 12582 US Highway 19 in Hudson
  • 1563 Land O Lakes Boulevard in Lutz
  • 8901 Sate Road 54 in New Port Richey
  • 3491 34th Street South in St. Petersburg
  • 28516 State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel
  • 7745 Gall Boulevard in Zephyrhills

The company plans to open the clinics before the end of June 2025, according to a statement.

“We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built health care spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states,” Walmart’s Executive Vice President of Health & Wellness Brian Setzer says in a statement. “Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful health care delivery organization is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health & wellness business of Pharmacy and Optical.”
