The New York Sports Club is shutting down three Lee County gyms and will lay off more than 100 employees.

The chain notified the state of its intentions in a letter Monday stating that the closings would be effective Sept. 1. Employees have been notified that all the layoffs are permanent.

The three locations that are closing are NYSC's only ones in Florida and there was no immediate news on whether others in the chain were also shutting down.

A company spokesperson declined to comment on questions about why the local gyms were closing or the fate of the others, referring to the letter. The letter was sent to state officials to meet federal Work Adjustment Retraining and Notification requirements.

NYSC is a New York institution that was founded in 1973 as Town Squash. Six years later it added exercise classes and Nautilus equipment and expanded in Washington D.C. in 1908. Today, according to its website, it operates facilities in seven states — including Florida — and employs 1,300.

It moved into the Florida market in 2019 when it bought Around the Clock Fitness.

The three local gyms that are closing are at: 9375 6 Mile Cypress Parkway and 1755 Boy Scout Drive, both in Fort Myers, as well as 1140 Ceitus Terrace in Cape Coral.
