When the Tampa Bay Sun FC played its first game Aug. 18, the sold out crowd got a chance to sample something a little out of the ordinary at a professional sporting event: food from a Bern’s Steak House food truck.

The renowned local eatery with a national reputation is bringing the truck to Blake High School game days this season with a menu made up of a classic steak sandwich with peppers, onions, mushrooms, and cheddar whiz and macadamia nut ice cream from its desert room. (The ice cream is the center of an ice cream sandwich.)

Speaking to the Business Observer in July for a story about how the team came into existence, David Laxer, co-owner of both the restaurant and the Tampa Bay Sun, said Bern’s wants “this to be fun for everyone and accessible for everyone. So that's our focus.”

While the steak house on South Howard Avenue is known for being pricey, Laxer told the Business Observer that “we're very conscious of our pricing points.”

Along with Bern’s and its sister concept Haven, several other local restaurants will also have concessions at Sun games this season. They include:

  • Small Giant Bar and Restaurant which will carry loaded nachos.
  • Greenlane which will carry Caesar, Mexicali and Harvest salads.
  • San Valentino Italian Market which will carry a charcuterie box with cheeses, meats, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Diggy Dogs which will carry the Diggy Dog Hotdog with mustard, ketchup, relish, and onions.
  • Salty Sisters Gourmet Popcorn which will carry its Sunchaser Mix.

The Tampa Bay Sun is part of the just-formed professional women’s soccer USL Super League.

The team played its first game Sunday, a 1-1 tie against Dallas Trinity FC. It takes on D.C. Power Saturday in Tampa.
