It isn't easy competing with Miami and Orlando and their talent pool, but two Gulf Coast hospitals have ranked among the best Florida hospitals, according to recent rankings by U.S. News and World Report and its most recent national list put out on Tuesday.

Tampa General Hospital and Sarasota Memorial Hospital even saw some of their specialty departments rank nationally, and well within the ranks of top hospital departments in New York City, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Tampa General Hospital ranked No. 4 in Florida, with some TGH departments ranking nationally. Sarasota Memorial tied for fifth in Florida.

TGH's obstetrics and gynecology department ranked No. 1 in Florida and No. 9 in the United States. Its gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery department ranked No. 19 in the U.S. and No. 1 in Florida. And its diabetes and endocrinology department ranked No. 18 in the U.S. and No. 2 in Florida.

Overall, six departments at TGH ranked in the nation's Top 50 medical departments, according to the magazine's annual rankings.

"Our rankings are a true reflection of our ability to drive unparalleled advancements to provide exceptional patient outcomes and care," says John Couris, TGH CEO, in a Tuesday statement.

Sarasota Memorial took the next ranking in the Florida list, ranking No. 5 and tying Baptist Health Baptist Hospital in Miami.

"The consistent, high performance of our hospital and care providers is something our health system and community can all take pride in," says David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, in a statement.

Sarasota hospital officials say Sarasota Memorial "has repeatedly been recognized in the '50 Best Hospitals' for at least one medical specialty and rated among the nation's top 10% for other high performing specialties, conditions and procedures."

Sarasota Memorial Hospital was ranked No. 31 for specialized rehabilitation and No. 46 for obstetrics and gynecology care, a new national ranking this year.

The rankings come at a time when TGH is expanding its footprint. Tampa General Hospital already has numerous clinics in the Tampa Bay and Miami areas, and recently bought three hospitals for $290 million in Brooksville, Spring Hill and Citrus County.
