SARASOTA — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announced it will acquire Gatan Inc., a subsidiary of Sarasota-based technology company Roper Technologies Inc., for approximately $925 million in cash.

Gatan manufactures instrumentation and software for electron microscopes. According to a press release, it has about 320 employees globally. It is headquartered in Pleasanton, Calif., with manufacturing operations in Warrendale, Penn. The release says Gatan is expected to generate approximately $150 million in revenue in 2018.

"Thermo Fisher is the perfect home for Gatan, and the combination of these businesses will be an ideal fit for Gatan's customers and employees," says Roper Chairman, President and CEO Brian Jellison in a statement.

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. At that point, Gatan will be part of Thermo Fisher's Analytical Instruments Segment.

"Adding Gatan's technologies to our leading electron microscopy portfolio will enhance our customer offering by creating an integrated system that seamlessly connects microscope hardware, software and accessories," says Dan Shine, president of Thermo Fisher's Analytical Instruments business, in a statement.

Roper Technologies operates businesses that design and develop software and engineered products and solutions for various markets.
