TAMPA — Moffitt Cancer Center has appointed Karen Wartenberg vice president of the Moffitt Medical Group, Florida's largest multidisciplinary medical group practice dedicated to cancer care.

According to a press release, Wartenberg joined Tampa-based Moffitt in 2006 and has worked extensively with the Moffitt Medical Group, where she has played a key role in developing financial and operational reporting tools.

As senior director of financial analysis and budgeting, she oversaw an annual operating budget of $1.2 billion and a capital budget of $96 million. She also managed forecasting, financial decision support and strategic financial planning, with a team of analysts offering financial advisory services across Moffitt. Wartenberg was also responsible for Medicare and Medicaid hospital cost reporting and reimbursement, as well as research indirect cost setting.

“Karen's keen insight and understanding of oncology practice issues have led to initiatives that greatly benefitted Moffitt Medical Group and Moffitt Cancer Center,” states Moffitt Medical Group president Douglas Letson in the release. “Karen has repeatedly demonstrated her ability to formulate strategies that have greatly contributed to our financial health.”

Wartenberg, according to the release, has also been instrumental in helping executive leadership save $40 million and surpass Moffitt's financial goals for the past five years. Her financial analysis leadership also supported the development of a nationally recognized lung cancer bundle payment model, as well as an oncology shared savings program.
