Airport announces record month

FORT MYERS — Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers reported the best May by passenger traffic in the 34-year history of the airport.

During the month, 629,321 passengers traveled through the airport. It represented an increase of 3.7% compared to May 2016, according to a press release.

The top traffic leaders in May were Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines. Southwest Florida International Airport had 5,922 aircraft takeoffs and landings during the month. That was an increase of 3.8% compared to May 2016. About 2.5 million pounds of air freight moved through the airport in May, which was an increase of 12.1% compared to May 2016.

Passenger traffic is up 1.4% year to date from the same period last year. According to a statement, Southwest Florida International Airport served 8.6 million passengers in 2016.
