Mattamy Homes, a Canadian residential builder among the most active on the Gulf Coast since the end of the recession, named homebuilding industry executive Jim Birkholz president of the Tampa-Sarasota division.

Birkholz will oversee all aspects of Mattamy's business, including land acquisition and development, marketing, sales and construction in the Tampa and Sarasota markets, according to a release. Birkholz is a boomerang executive for the company: He was the company's Minnesota Division president from 2008-2009.

"Jim brings a wealth of business and people leadership experience to Mattamy, and we are very much looking forward to him leading the Tampa-Sarasota Division forward," says Jim Leiferman, President of Mattamy's US Group, in the release. "We're pleased and fortunate that he made the decision to return to Mattamy, as it's an exciting time for our business in western Florida, and he is the ideal person to take the reins for us."

Birkholz has held executive leadership roles in the homebuilding industry for 15 years. He was most recently President of the Northeast Florida division for CalAtlantic Group. He has also held executive posts for Standard Pacific Homes, Pinnacle Consulting Group, Centex's Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach Divisions and was vice president of operations of Pulte's Atlanta Division.

"I re-joined Mattamy because of the strength of the senior leadership team in the U.S. and the company's private status, which facilitates a long-term focus on creating value in the homebuilding space," Birkholz says in the release. "Mattamy's U.S. business has tremendous opportunity for future growth and I look forward to working with the Tampa-Sarasota team to help capitalize on and contribute to that opportunity in the years to come."

Mattamy Homes has sold more than 70,000 homes in 160 communities across Canada and the United States. Projects in the region it has developed include Harmony at Lakewood Ranch; Enclave at Forest Lakes in Sarasota; and the Lakeshore Preserve in Tampa.
