PUNTA GORDA — The Florida Department of Transportation named Punta Gorda Airport as the best commercial airport in the state.

The Florida Department of Transportation awards its coveted commercial airport of the year award to one of 20 commercial service airports in Florida each year. The award recognizes superior achievement in all aspects of management and customer service including safety and security, financial operations and overall management. The department announced the winner at the annual Florida Airports Council conference, held recently in the Bonita Springs.

Allegiant Air is currently the sole commercial operator at Punta Gorda Airport and it flies passengers to 30 cities with nonstop jet service. The airport is on track to reach 1 million passengers this year and recently opened a new terminal building.

“We are extremely proud that the Punta Gorda Airport was recognized that Florida Department of Transportation,” says Paul Andrews, chairman of the Charlotte County Airport Authority, in a statement. “The team effort of the airport authority board and staff has resulted in tremendous growth of our airport and its contribution to the community's well-being.”
