TAMPA — With a net worth of $3.4 billion, Edward DeBartolo Jr. is the richest person in Tampa, according to a new Forbes list of the wealthiest people in America's 50 largest cities.
A majority of DeBartolo's fortune is tied to Simon Property Group, a publicly traded real estate company, according to Forbes. Aside from the Simon family, DeBartolo is the company's largest individual shareholder, with a stake of less than 5%. DeBartolo, 69, merged DeBartolo Realty Corp. — which his father founded — with Simon Property Group in 1996.
DeBartolo, who owned the San Francisco 49ers NFL franchise from 1977 to 2000, has a large impact on Tampa. He runs a property development and investment firm; he co-founded a charter high school with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer star Derrick Brooks; and he is on the board for the Moffitt Cancer Center, according to Forbes.
Outside of Tampa, Florida has three other cities on Forbes' list: Orlando, Miami and Jacksonville. The wealthiest people in those respective cities are David Siegel with a net worth of $900 million; Thomas Peterffy with a net worth of $12.5 billion; and Wayne Weaver with a net worth of $870 million.
