FORT MYERS — Buoyed by reports of an improving economy, Lee County commissioners on Tuesday raised taxes on new construction.

During the downturn, the county commission slashed taxes on new construction to 20% of what it was during the boom years to help the industry. On Tuesday, commissioners voted 4-1 to increase so-called “impact fees” starting March 16 for the next three years to 45% of what the tax was during the boom.

For example, homebuilders will now have to pay a one-time tax of $6,131 for each new home they build. That compares to $2,942 currently.

Despite the tax increase, the Lee Building Industry Association says it successfully persuaded Lee County commissioners from fully reinstating the tax on new construction for at least the next three years.
