CLEARWATER -- John Tonnison has expanded his chief information officer role at Tech Data Corp. to include the growing technology cloud market.

Tonnison, Tech Data's CIO since 2009, will oversee the Clearwater-based technology wholesaler's global cloud operations in both the Americas and Europe.

Cloud computing has become popular because of its lower upfront costs, although capital dollars are typically shifted to operational dollars to manage the cloud services. Through cloud technology, companies don't have to purchase costly computer hardware to set up servers, or hire people to maintain it. Instead, those companies outsource both the storage and support.

Tonnison joined Tech Data in 2001 as vice president of worldwide e-business, leading to the development of the company's e-business strategy and tools. He led the company's IT division in the Americas before he was named CIO.

Tech Data, which trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol TECD, reported net income of $51.3 million, or $1.39 per share, for the quarter ended April 30, on revenues of $5.9 billion. That compares to $13.5 million, or 35 cents per share, profit the year before, on revenues of $6.7 billion.
