There's little doubt that fielding a winning team means big payoffs for colleges.
The latest example: Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, which fielded a winning men's basketball team to the NCAA Sweet 16 in March 2013 and earned Fort Myers the nickname “Dunk City.”
FGCU athletics officials say the basketball program's success generated nearly $1 million for the school in ticket sales, fundraising and other income.
The basketball team's success spilled over into FGCU's general fundraising efforts. For example, fundraising activities generated $691,742 this fiscal year, a 74% increase over 2013.
In total, FGCU Athletics reported revenues totaled nearly $4 million in this fiscal year. That's a 28% increase over the same period the prior year.
