CRYSTAL RIVER - Duke Energy Florida will sell 76 unused nuclear fuel assemblies from its retired Crystal River Nuclear Plant, located north of Tampa, through a request for proposals process.

All proceeds from the sale of the Crystal River assets will benefit Florida by reducing the amount of money the power company may recover from customers, the company says in a statement.

Only federally licensed U.S. nuclear power plants and fuel fabricators will receive Duke Energy Florida's request for proposals to buy the assemblies.

The sale is part of the decommissioning of the facility, which is expected to take up to 60 years.

Charlotte, N.C-based Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) is the largest electric power holding company in the U.S. with approximately $115 billion in total assets. Its utility operations serve approximately 7.2 million customers in six states in the Southwest and Midwest.
