UNIVERSITY PARK — First Watch Restaurants, a fast-growing breakfast-brunch-lunch chain, has acquired Nashville-based Bread & Co., a popular restaurant business with two locations.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. University Park-based First Watch, according to a release, also acquired recipes and intellectual property Bread & Co. owned or created.

Both Bread & Co. locations are in the Nashville area. One location has a new long-term lease, while the building for another store is undergoing an extensive renovation, according to the statement. Entrepreneur Anne Clay founded Bread & Co. in 1992. Back then it was an artisan bakery that served only breads, rolls, pastries and coffee in a space with 15 seats. Under the leadership of Clay's son, John Clay III, the company has since expanded its menu to include salads, soups and sandwiches.

“Bread & Co. built a loyal following in Middle Tennessee over many years and John and his family did a great job growing the brand and concept,” First Watch President and CEO Ken Pendery says in the release. “When John decided that it was time for the next adventure in his life, we began discussing how First Watch might be in a position to provide an ideal transition as part of our successful expansion in Nashville. Combining the strengths of both brands means an incredibly differentiated offering for fans of both concepts.”

First Watch operates more than 120 restaurants in 17 states, including two in towns south of Nashville. It also operates 20 restaurants under The Good Egg name in Arizona.
