Business owners on the Gulf Coast have long been concerned about inflation, but so far the data show it has remained tame overall.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a special metro-area consumer price index twice a month for Miami and once every six months for Tampa. Both still show tame inflation, though the data doesn't yet reflect any increases in March or April.

In Miami, annual inflation is rising at a 1.9% annual clip, driven by increases in medical care (up 4.5%). Over the year, energy prices rose just 1.4%. Within the energy sector, the government noted that electricity prices fell 0.4% over that period.

In the Tampa area, annual inflation is rising at a slightly faster 2.3% rate. Apparel (up 10.2%) and medical care (up 5.2%) contributed to the increase. Tampa's energy component rose 2.4%.

So far, housing inflation also remains relatively flat. The latest figures show annual housing inflation at 1.5% in Miami and 2.2% in Tampa.
