FORT MYERS — Home prices in the Fort Myers continued to surge in January, rising 22% compared with the same month a year ago as demand increased and inventories shrank.

The median price of an existing single-family home rose to $140,000 in the Fort Myers area in January from $114,900 in January 2012, according to the Realtor Association of Greater Fort Myers and the Beach.

There were fewer sales in January as prices spiked. Realtors helped sell 759 homes in January, a 12% drop from the same month in 2012.

“While the months supply of inventory has increased, the number of homes available for purchase is down 3.4% versus January 2012. Limited inventory is escalating competition for available homes, especially in the $50,000 to $200,000 price range,” says Doreen Falcone, president of the association, in a statement.
