That didn't take long.

Andy Enfield, the coach of the Florida Gulf Coast University's men's basketball team, became the new coach of the University of Southern California just days after guiding the Eagles to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Terms of Enfield's deal were not disclosed, but it appears from the speed of things that Fort Myers-based FGCU had no chance to retain the winning coach, despite reportedly raising money to try to double his $157,000 annual salary. According to ESPN, Enfield's deal is for “well over $1 million a year,”and for six years, says an unnamed source quoted by the sports network.

Enfield became a star when he guided the 15th-seeded FGCU Eagles men's basketball team to a berth in the Sweet 16. The team's victories captivated the nation and energized the young university's students and alumni. The team's spectacular dunks and alley-oops earned Fort Myers a new nickname: Dunk City.

In his second year at FGCU, the 43-year-old Enfield led the Eagles to a school-record 26 wins in 2013, including a victory over Miami. The Eagles won the Atlantic Sun Tournament with an 88-75 victory over Mercer.

In the school's second season of NCAA Division I post-season eligibility, FGCU became the first team since Florida in 1987 to win the first two NCAA tournament games it ever played. As the NCAA tourney's No. 15 seed, the Eagles shocked second-seeded Georgetown and then seventh-seed San Diego State to advance to the Sweet 16. Enfield leaves FGCU with a 41-28 record during his two years as its head coach.
