FORT MYERS — Passenger traffic fell 12.9% at Southwest Florida International Airport in April compared with the same month a year ago, reflecting higher fares and service cutbacks.

The Lee County Port Authority reported 790,322 passengers passed through the Fort Myers airport in April. Passenger traffic is down 5.6% for the year-to-date through April compared with the same four-month period one year ago.

Takeoffs and landings at Southwest Florida International Airport fell nearly 21% in April compared with the same month in 2011 as airlines have been cutting back on all but the most profitable routes.

The top five airlines serving the Fort Myers airport in April were Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, AirTran and USAirways.
