SARASOTA — Diane McFarlin, the publisher of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and a well-known community advocate, has been named dean of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida.
Allen Parsons, former publisher of the Ocala Star-Banner, was named interim publisher, according to the Herald-Tribune, the largest daily paper by circulation in the Sarasota-Manatee region. Parsons previously worked for the Herald-Tribune, including a stint as a managing editor.
McFarlin couldn't immediately be reached for comment. In an interview with the Business Review Friday, McFarlin says she was told the search was in its final stages, but she hadn't been offered the position.
McFarlin, who graduated from the University of Florida, has been involved in local journalism for three decades, including the last 13 years as the Herald-Tribune's publisher. She's also been recognized for her roles in local philanthropy, including her work with the Season of Sharing campaign and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
The Herald-Tribune had been owned by the New York Times Co. for the bulk of McFarlin's career. The Times sold the paper to Halifax Media Group earlier this year.
