PORT CHARLOTTE — Charlotte County economic development officials are exploring the creation of an enterprise zone that would provide tax advantages and incentives for businesses that locate there.

Officials with the Charlotte County Economic Development Office will hold a public meeting 9 a.m. Thursday at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Convention Center in Punta Gorda to discuss the effort and establish the boundaries of the enterprise zone.

After the boundaries of the enterprise zone are established, the county commission will review the proposal and vote on it. If approved, an Enterprise Zone Development Agency will be created and a plan will be submitted for approval by the state of Florida.

Charlotte economic development officials expect to complete the process by Dec. 31.
