A new state bill would bar employers from checking a prospective employee's credit history as part of the hiring process if it becomes law.

Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, filed the bill this week, arguing that credit history is an “improper” tool for evaluating a prospective employee's fitness for work.

According to Siplin's bill, employers would have to show that credit history is relevant to the position being filled before requesting the information. But even in those cases, credit history could not ultimately be used as the “determining factor” in hiring the prospective worker.
