SAINT LEO — Donald Tapia is the new chairman of the board of trustees for St. Leo University, a Catholic university located just northeast of Tampa, effective July 1, according to an official statement from the school.

Tapia earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. Leo's Center for Online Learning in 2005, and his M.B.A. in 2007. In 2008, he sold his business, Essco Wholesale Electric Inc., for an undisclosed price; two years later, he donated $4 million to St. Leo University.

St. Leo's Donald R. Tapia School of Business is currently under construction, and is slated to open this August.

St. Leo has more than 15,000 students in more than 40 academic programs. Its campus in Saint Leo is roughly 30 miles north of Tampa.
