Lehigh Acres, like so many land-boom residential developments in the 1960s in Florida, was left with miles of cookie-cutter residential lots and little thought to future commercial development.

But Lee County is spearheading efforts to develop a community plan for that unincorporated area, and it even includes a downtown. One of these commercial centers could be Homestead Road, between Beth Stacey Boulevard and Delaware Road.

Lehigh Acres is known now for its marijuana busts, cheap housing and foreclosures. But government and citizens groups hope a series of code workshops will help Lehigh overcome its stigma and be a desirable place to live and work.
