Term limits proposed for elected officials

TALLAHASSEE — State senators, state representatives and elected county and city officials could serve for up to 12 years under a proposed Senate resolution to amend the state constitution — which would require voter approval. The measure would also change the terms of office for Senate members from four years to six, and increase the terms for House members from two to four years. The resolution does not change the terms for local government officials, which the constitution does not currently limit. The Senate joint resolution (SJR 300) is sponsored by Sen. President Pro-tempore Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton.
