NAPLES -- Health Management Associates Inc. (symbol: HMA) named Mike Fencel the new CEO of its North Florida Division.

Fencel comes to HMA from Brandon Regional Hospital, where he led as CEO. During his tenure there, the Tampa Bay area hospital added more than 150 beds, as well as a new open heart surgery program, a release from HMA says.

The facilities under Fencel's oversight will include Shands Lake Shore in Lake City, Brooksville Regional Hospital, Spring Hill Regional Hospital, and Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City, among others.

Through its subsidiaries, Naples-based Health Management Associates operates 66 hospitals, with approximately 10,400 licensed beds located throughout the United States.

HMA stock is down nearly 30% over the past year. After peaking near $12 this past spring, the stock now trades for less than $7 a share.
