Sarasota County buys land for Honore-Pinebrook extension

BUYER: Sarasota County, Sarasota

SELLER: McCann Holdings Ltd.

PROPERTY: South of State Road 681 to near Ranch Road, Nokomis

PRICE: $3.5 million

LAW FIRM ON DEED: Fergeson Skipper Shaw Keyser Baron & Tirabassi PA, Sarasota

PLANS, DESCRIPTION: Sarasota County government purchased 43 acres of agricultural land bordering Interstate 75 south of State Road 681 for $3.5 million.

The purchase price equated to $81,414 per acre, but occurred under the threat of condemnation.

The property was acquired by the county as part of its plan to extend Pinebrook Road/Honore Avenue in the south from Laurel Road in Nokomis north to State Road 681 to create a local north-south connector.

The property includes about 19 acres of road right of way, 19 acres of ponds and flood plains, 3.5 acres of drainage and slope easements and 1.2 acres of temporary construction easements.

“The plan is for it to be four lanes, although not all of that may be constructed immediately,” says Lin Kurant, real property manager for Sarasota County. “Hopefully this will get local traffic off I-75. It would also serve as a better diversion road than sending cars over to [U.S.] 41.”

Construction on the roadway is already underway on a separate stretch of property between Bee Ridge and Fruitville. The developer of Palmer Ranch is also expected to start soon on the portion of the road that runs from Central Sarasota Parkway to State Road 681.
