First Quarter Blitz

By Francis X. Gilpin

Associate Editor

All is right with the world of Gulf Coast community banking. The 46 community banks and thrifts that are chartered within the five-county circulation area of the Gulf Coast Business Review earned a collective $20.7 million during the first quarter of 2005. That was about $7 million, or 51%, higher than what they earned for the same period last year.

"I've never seen asset quality like this," says veteran banker John P. O'Neill, president of Century Bank in Sarasota. "And we're not having to pay up for deposits."

That sounds like a great climate for making money in community banking.

Century Bank, a unit of Pompano Beach-based Century Financial Group Inc., continues on a tear. The Sarasota thrift has increased assets by 25% and deposits by 31% during the past year. But the $539 million-asset Century Bank also boosted profits by 37%.

"I've been able to groom a team. When you've been working together for a while, the execution is much easier," says O'Neill, the Review's 2004 banker of the year. "They know all the dance steps."

Other banks are emphasizing growth. Coast Bank of Florida and the Bank of St. Petersburg grew by leaps and bounds.

Coast, a subsidiary of Coast Financial Holdings Inc., added $120 million in assets from first-quarter 2004 to first-quarter 2005. That brings the Bradenton bank's asset total to $424 million, accumulated in just five years.

The Bank of St. Petersburg, which has moved rapidly into Tampa, attracted $64 million in additional deposits over last year, a 73% hike. But the $198 million-asset subsidiary of Tampa-based Bank of St. Petersburg Holdings Inc., also climbed back into the black for the first quarter. Following a $455,000 loss for the 2004 quarter, the bank reported net income of $155,000 this year so far.

Local banks that have had growing pains or regulatory issues are starting to pick up the pace, too.

Take People's Community Bank of the West Coast, with $214 million in assets.

The Sarasota bank was among the 10 best Gulf Coast banks at bringing in more deposits and making more loans during the first quarter. Assets went up 50% over last year.

But the 5-and-a-half-year-old bank, a unit of People's Community Bancshares Inc., saw a better than fourfold jump in net income for the quarter. Earnings went from $92,000 last year to $438,000 for the January-to-March period this year. People's Community Bank also showed some of the best improvement in returns of any Gulf Coast bank.

Neil D. McCurry Jr., president and chief executive of People's Community Bank, says his institution is beginning to come into its own.

"When you first open, you've got tellers and check processors but you don't have customers yet," says McCurry. "We had some capacity but we know we're growing into it now."

People's Community Bank does mostly business and commercial real estate lending. So McCurry says his loan officers haven't had to worry as much about housing bubbles and interest-only residential mortgages.

The bank recently opened an office in Venice and is considering other locations for 2006 and 2007 within its primary service area of Manatee and Sarasota counties. "We're just going to continue to work hard and grow into our infrastructure," says McCurry.

McCurry says the bank's second quarter is shaping up better than the first.

A smaller commercial specialist, Southern Commerce Bank, is regaining some footing. The Tampa bank, with $87 million in assets, is recovering nicely from a 2002 cease-and-desist order that was issued by state and federal regulators over its lending and capital management practices.

Southern Commerce dramatically improved net income for the quarter, adding $252,000 to the bottom line. Return on assets increased by 122 basis points while return on equity jumped 1,050 basis points.

The Bank of Tampa keeps chugging along. During the first quarter, the subsidiary of the Tampa Banking Co. enhanced what is already one of the most valuable community banking franchises on the Gulf Coast.

Assets and deposits increased at the same 15% clip, a good pace for an established bank. The 32-year-old bank now has $740 million in assets.

But the profit picture was more impressive. The Bank of Tampa was the most profitable bank in the region, earning $1.7 million for the quarter. That was a very respectable improvement of 85% over the year-earlier quarter.

The Bank of Tampa concentrates on professionals and family-owned businesses in Hillsborough County. "We do a better job of servicing that group than anybody else in this market," says President A. Gerald Divers. "And people have come to know that. When people are unhappy with their bank, a friend, their accountant, their lawyer will mention us."

Divers thought the word-of-mouth approach was the best promotion. He says he has been surprised by the fact that the bank has doubled in size since it began a major print advertising push. Divers won't credit the customer testimonials in the ads for all of that growth, but he figures it has to be more than a coincidence.

A rising interest rate environment should help profitability at his bank, according to Divers.

On the liability side of the ledger, the Bank of Tampa has an unusually large percentage of demand deposits because of its customer loyalty, says Divers. Those deposits are expensive to service. But they become less so as rates return closer to historical norms, he says.
