Judge Honored for Integrity

For the second time in as many weeks, Pinellas-Pasco Judge George Greer was honored by his peers for his steadfastness to honor, high ideals, judicial competence and service.

Greer - the Clearwater probate judge at the center of the Terri Schiavo case - was given the Clearwater Bar Association's John U. Bird award at the association's 43rd annual Law Day luncheon at the Harborview Center.

Association President Robert G. Dickinson III said: "Rarely is a person's mettle and faith tested in such a strenuous and public way as this gentleman's has been over the last few years."

Greer has ruled that Schiavo's feeding tube could be removed, a decision staunchly opposed by her parents and their many supporters, including Gov. Jeb Bush and members of the Florida Legislature. The case has attracted national attention, with rallies and protests held outside the downtown Clearwater courthouse.

Greer, who has faced death threats and insults, is the first judge to win the award twice since its establishment in 1986. On April 30, the St. Petersburg Bar Association gave Greer its 2004 Judicial Appreciation Award.

The Clearwater association also honored Robert D. McIntyre, president, chief executive and chairman of the board of Ditek Inc., with its Liberty Bell Award. In addition, Clearwater police Capt. Tony Holloway received the Allen G. Moore Gold Badge Award. And William J. Falkner, senior assistant Pinellas County Attorney, was awarded the Ralph Richards Award for professional excellence. Falkner, who returned from Iraq a few months ago, was at the Pentagon and unable to attend the ceremony.
