Attorney gives gift

that can't be repaid

Bay Area Legal Services attorney Nancy Lugo gave a gift to a 20-year-old woman she never met and it's one that can never be repaid in kind. Lugo donated a kidney in late November to Stefanie Reed.

Reed had been waiting for a donor kidney for about two years. Lugo heard of the woman's health problems through her mother, Judy Reed, who also worked at Bay Area Legal Services. When Lugo found out her blood type matched the young woman, she talked to her husband who gave her his blessing to donate the organ.

Stefanie says of Lugo, "Nancy is my angel. I thank her for giving me back my life."

Attorney named president

of the U.S. Golf Association

Foley & Lardner partner Fred Ridley was named president of the United States Golf Association, which serves as golf's official governing body. His one-year term begins in February.

Ridley, 51, is a former professional golfer who won the 1975 U.S. Amateur, played in three Masters and the U.S. Open and captained in the U.S. Walker Cup Team in 1987 and 1989. He is co-chair of the firm's 22-member golf and industry team and a member of the Tampa real estate practice group. In preparation for his role as president, Ridley served four years as chairman of the Championship Committee, which is responsible for all USGA competitions.

The organization runs 13 national championships, refines the rules, and maintains a national handicapping system among other things. Ridley is the second Foley & Lardner partner to serve as USGA president. Lynford Lardner, a championship golfer, held the position in 1972-73.
