Walter Peek hasn’t wasted any downtime during the COVID-19 crisis. The founder and CEO of Commercial Acoustics, a Tampa-based soundproofing firm, has written and published a soundproofing and acoustics handbook for architects and general contractors.
Peek says hard copies of the book, "Fundamentals of Architectural Acoustics," are available now. With some social-distancing restrictions easing, he plans to embark on a “book tour” — handing out complimentary copies of the book to architects with whom his firm has worked.
It’s no surprise Peek has a bookish side. Prior to launching Commercial Acoustics in 2016, he worked as a structural engineer at Kennedy Space Center. He also holds a patent for the design of the sound-muffling curtains the firm makes for multifamily developments.
That product served as the inspiration for the book, Peek states in a press release: After years of assisting apartment and condo dwellers with noise coming through their windows, he says he realized that the only way to truly fix the problem was to help architects and contractors better understand how to cost effectively soundproof units.
“People have been building buildings the same way for 50 years when it comes to sound attenuation,” he told the Business Observer in 2017.
He adds, via the release, “They seem to be making the same mistakes over and over. Whether it was mounting through resilient channels or spot treating with floor underlayments, there was a lot of money being spent on products and systems that weren’t improving the sound performance.”
